I agree that art history does have a sometimes annoying tendency to overlay meaning onto paintings when it was never the intention, and the observation of the homo-erotic nature of this painting is just an opinion. However given how unusual the subject and composition of the work is for the time, this viewpoint has given the painting more a contemporary relevance and an enhanced meaning for some viewers.

Twoddle twoddle twoddle. I have no axe to grind about gays, trans or any other orientation of human preference, but the conclusions of this writer about the ‘gayness’ of this work is pure cod’s wallop. I sing a lot of maritime songs, and there is a similar revisionist tendancy among some of my gay and trans peers to brand songs in this manner. (For example, calling every clandestine woman who dressed as and pretended to be a man in order to do things that women could not, like go to sea or fight in war, a lesbian). This art is wonderful and whatever the sexual preference of the artist, there are no subversive messages here.
